Interview: Pastor Barnabas

Pastor Barnabas of FGA Chinese Church is one busy man! Only a busy man will answer questions in point form as opposed to giving long winded answers. And yet his answers reveal a man deeply committed to prayer. A prayer warrior who loves CSI & Star Wars. Hey! This saint is just like us!

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
1) Travel to Work
2) Staff Devotion
3) Start Work

Do you have set times to pray every day? Do you think about God and prayer the whole day?
Two times a day – (i) Staff Devotion – uphold the whole day and (ii) Night prayers – thanksgiving & reflection prayers. Occasionally, especially when facing pressure.

What is your favorite movie, TV show now?
Star Wars, Documentary and CSI

What is a typical working day for you? Can you describe to us?
Start the day with staff devotion then proceed to plan for the day, clearing backlogs and prepare training materials. Lunch. Continue on preparing training materials and visitation if any.

For most of us, when the workday ends we think about leisure, the TV , loved ones, cinema, internet rather than seeking God or even praying. When your workday ends what do you think about?
It is the same like everyone else, sometimes will set aside the time to go for divinity bible studies. When the workday ends, pray before going to sleep.

When did you first start praying consistently? What made you resolve to do this? Was it smooth sailing or did you experience problems?
After 10 years I accepted Christ at the age of 21 years old. Felt the responsibility to pray as a Christian. Not smooth sailing, experienced problems like indiscipline, busyness and do not feel the need to pray.

Many of us, especially young adults have difficulty praying, there are just so many distractions, did you face similar difficulties as a young adult?
Yes. Not interesting to pray and too few items to pray about.

How did you get the burden to intercede for others? And then for the nation?
After sensing the needs of others and yet unable to help physically. After understanding problems our nation is facing.

We all have a desire at times to pray for our needs, our family, when problems crop up. Then when things start getting better we forget to pray and the desire is lost. How did you keep this fire for praying going?
Discipline oneself through consistent prayer on one item, until it is ingrained inside our heart as a habit.

What would you tell someone who longs to have this desire every day?
(1) Must join in a corporate prayer (prayer meeting/prayer watch)– it will encourage and enrich our personal lifestyles. (2) Read more prayer books. (3) Pray with a prayer partner
