Interview: Eugene Hng
Eugene Hng is an inspiring Christian who has decided to sign up for RunNat09 despite being a blind individual. His faith in God is very encouraging and inspiring for all. We had a chat with him to find out what inspires him to run for God despite his disability.
RC: Hi Eugene! Thanks for agreeing to be interviewed. Can I ask what do you do for a living?
EH: I work as a telephonist at RHB. I have been there for 19 years since when it was still UMBC.
RC: That’s a long time. How long have you been a Christian?
EH: I became a Christian 15 years ago whilst I was still in school. It was a teacher of mine who brought me to Christ.
RC: You are taking part in RunNat. What drew you to it?
EH: I think my motivation was influence by the news I read daily. I get disturbed by what I read. Although there is a movement to bring about change in Malaysia I know that no politician can change the nation-only God can. That’s who we need to look to.We are at the threshold of a change in Malaysia and I wanted to be part of that generation that looks to God for answers to our country’s needs.
RC: How have you been preparing for the prayer run?
EH: I have been training with Keney Martin at Bkt Jalil. Today I finished my first ever 5 km! It was painful but thank God I finished it.
RC: Congratulations! Most of our runners do not know this but you are visually impaired. Have you always been blind?
EH: I wasn’t born blind but I had a nerve condition from young which gradually robbed me of my sight. I lost my sight a few years back.
RC: We are running on roads. How do you intend to complete the course?
EH: You do not need eyes to pray. What is important is what is in your heart. Faith is believing and not seeing. Keney will be running side by sie with me . KeneyHe will alert me if there are any potholes or obstacles. I am in the first team which starts at 5am so there should not be too much traffic.
RC: What do you hope to see come out of this event?
EH: Like everyone else, I want to see permanent positive changes in the country.
RC: What advice do you have for Runners who feel they can’t complete the distance?
EH: Well by choosing to take part you have already won half the battle! I found that praying whilst running also helped increase my strength! I saw some bible promises become real for me. The Bible says the joy of the Lord is my strength. I kept repeating that when I got tired and I pushed further! I am enjoying my running time so much now that I intend to continue training so that I will be better prepared for any future events like this!
